Preoperative Physical Therapy Session | Knee

Prior to undergoing a total hip or knee replacement surgery, you will have a session with our physical therapist to discuss the upcoming surgery and what to expect after. The therapist will discuss postoperative strategies involved in easing your transition to home with the use of ambulatory aids and home health items such as raised toilet seats. Your anticipated weight-bearing status and how to properly use a walker, crutches or cane will also be discussed and demonstrated. You will practice the simulated scenario of having a knee or hip replacement surgery and the exercises that will facilitate recovery will be addressed. If you are undergoing a hip replacement, postoperative precautions regarding hip positions to avoid will be addressed as well.

The purpose of this therapy session is to ease the anxiety associated with the postoperative activity and restrictions after total hip and knee replacement and to educate you about activities that will maximize and facilitate recovery.
